“This,” said the scientist taking a glass slideand putting it under the microscope, “is the famous cholera bacillus.”

The young man looked into themicroscope.

“Little pieces of pink,” hemuttered, “and yet they could destroy acity.

Are theses dangerous now?”

“No, not very dangerous.

But here is the living thing.

The scientist picked up a testtube.

“This is bottled cholera.”

The rather nervous young man looked atthe test tube with satisfaction.

He was atthe scientist’s house that afternoon with aletter of introduction from an old friend.

The scientist explained the terrible effectsof cholera and added, “But it is very safehere, you know, very safe.”

Just then there was a knocked on the labdoor.

The scientist immediately gat up andopened it.

“Just a minute, dear,” hewhispered to his wife, Minnie.

When he came back, his visitor waslooking at his watch.

“I must be going,” hesaid.

The scientist showed him out of the housebut when he got back to the laboratory, hesuddenly had a really horrible thought.

“Oh no!”

he cried and rushed after theyoung man.

Minnie heard the door close very violently.

She went to the window and looked out.

The young man was getting into a cab andher husband, in his skippers, was runningafter him, shouting.

“He has gone completely mad!”

saidMinnie.

“It’s that horrid science of his.”

Thehorse and cab left and then her husbandstopped another cab and followed it.

“Iknow he is a bit eccentric,” Minnie said toherself, “but this!”

She put on her coat andhat, picked up her husband’s shoes andwent out.

She stopped a passing cab.

“Drive me up the road,” she said.

“I amlooking for a gentleman with no shoes andhat.”

By this time, three cabs were drivingextremely fast through the streets ofLondon.

He stood up andgave the driver more money saying, “Hurryup!

The cab moved suddenly andwhen the anarchist put his hand down tokeep his balance, he broke the test tube.

He looked at the two or three drops ofliquid on his hand.

“Well, I’ll be the first todie,” he said and drank the remainingdrops.

Then, he realized that there was no needto get away.

He told the driver to stop andgot out.

He waited for the scientist’s caband said to him, “It is too late.

I have drunkit.

I’ll be the first person with cholera!”

The scientist looked at him.

“I see now.”

Then a big smile came over the scientist’sface.

The anarchist waved goodbye andwalked away.

Suddenly, the scientist saw Minnie holdinghis top hat, shoes and coat.

“Very good ofyou to bring my things,” he said.

They gotinto his cab and asked the driver to takethem back home.
