You find them in Asia, Central and South America and parts of Africa. The temperatures there are between 25 and 30°C all year round and it rains heavily almost every day. These hot, wet conditions are ideal for plants, so the vegetation is dense and rich, and the wildlife is incredibly diverse. More than half of the world’s plant and animal species live in these forests. There are four layers in a tropical rainforest. The top part is called the emergent layer. It consists of the tallest trees in the forest, which receive the most sunlight. The next section is called the canopy and a huge number of birds, insects, reptiles and mammals live there. There is so much food at this level that some animals never go down to the lower parts. The third section is called the understorey. It is dark and cool and consists of smaller trees and shrubs. The lowest part is called the forest floor. It’s home to larger animals, like tapirs and jaguars. Only 1% of sunlight reaches the forest floor. We have already destroyed more than half of the world’s tropical rainforests, either for wood or through farming. If we carry on like this, we might wipe them out completely in less than forty years from now. One solution is to use the forests in a sustainable way, by using their natural resources, such as fruit, nuts and medicinal plants, without destroying the trees. 1.The vegetation is 2.The wildlife is 3.The top part is 4.The second section is 5.
