A Tests may make pupils dislike learning things

B Why tests may be important

C Some pupils like doing tests

D Why some skills are important for our futures

E What happened in the past

E. The question of whether to test isn't easy to answer.

G The tests have changed.

H Can everything be tested?

1

Fashions in education change with each generation. In the UK, for example, our parents' generation may not have had as many tests as pupils nowadays. They certainly did school leaving tests, like pupils do now. But they didn't have to succeed in tests all the way through school.

2

Nowadays, test results are used for deciding whether pupils are in the right class. Tests can show that some students are very gifted, for example. So classes might be too easy for them. But if a pupil is finding everything hard, a test tells the teacher there's a problem.

3 Testing works well in areas that are easy to test, such as Science or Geography. But other skills, like being creative or being sociable are also very important. However, they're not quite so easy to measure.

4

Being creative is necessary if you want to have a job in the arts, for example. You need to think 'outside the box'. That means finding unusual solutions to difficult situations. So it's essential that pupils also learn these skills, and not just things they can do well at in tests.

5 What's more, not all schools believe in testing. They feel that until pupils leave school, it's more important that they should just love learning. And they feel the best way is to take away the stress of tests. So pupils only take tests when they have to compete with other pupils and apply for college and university.

6

And some parents actually agree with the schools that don't test. In fact, some even take their children out of school to teach them at home. They feel this is better. So who is right? Maybe there isn't only one correct solution, and it all depends

Turn on your TV any evening of the week, and you'll probably find there's a detective series on one channel or another. The Inspector Morse series, for example, is based on a well-known detective from Oxford, who was the creation of his author, Colin Dexter. Other on-screen detectives are created specially by writers for TV series.

But all the programmes are very popular, and watched by millions of people all around the world. Of course, many people have their own favourite detectives - and nowadays they can watch old shows again and again, as they're repeated on cable and satellite channels.

So what's the reason for the popularity of these detective programmes? Some of the stories are quite unlikely, and it's hard to believe in them, and others involve crimes that would be very serious in real life. But perhaps because they're in a TV show, they don't have the same effect on us.

Of course, lots of people enjoy attempting to solve the

crime faster than the detective by noticing things and

spotting clues. But sometimes it's not possible because

at the last minute, something new is discovered that we

couldn't possibly know and that's disappointing!

Reading crime novels has become popular, too. They

were once something that people just bought at aimorts
